Tungnath Temple Opening & Closing Dates in 2026

The opening date for Tungnath Temple has been officially announced making it the perfect time to plan your journey to the world’s highest Shiva shrine.

Set amidst the stunning Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand, Tungnath Temple stands at an elevation of 3,680 meters (12,073 feet). Known for its deep spiritual significance, it is revered as the third Kedar among the sacred Panch Kedar temples, where Lord Shiva’s arms are worshipped.

Believed to be over 1,000 years old, the temple carries immense mythological and historical importance. According to legend, it was built by the Pandavas during their exile. Despite its remote location, the temple showcases remarkable Himalayan architecture, constructed using local stone and wood, with a serene black marble idol of Lord Shiva at its core.

Reaching Tungnath is a journey in itself. The trek begins from Chopta often called the “Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand” and spans approximately 3.5 km through lush meadows and rhododendron forests, offering breathtaking views at every step.

Tungnath Temple Opening Date 2026

The temple will open on 22 April 2026 (Wednesday) at 7:00 AM, aligned with the auspicious Hindu calendar date of Vaishakh Shukla Paksha.

  • Morning Aarti: 6:00 AM
  • Darshan: 7:00 AM – 12:00 PM
  • Evening Darshan: 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM
  • Evening Aarti: 6:30 PM

(No entry fee required)

The temple is expected to remain open until early November, after which it closes for winter, and the deity is ceremonially moved to Makku Math.

How to Reach

Your journey typically begins from Rishikesh or Haridwar, both well-connected by road, rail, and air. From there, travel to Chopta via Ukhimath, and begin your scenic trek to Tungnath.
